#TBT on Instagram: what does it mean, how and what is it used for?

TBT is the well-known hashtag whose meaning is “Throwback Thursday”, a tag that is becoming increasingly popular on social networks. Now, what do these three letters really mean, and why are they so widely used nowadays? It’s very simple, this phrase could be translated as “Thursday of yesteryear” or “Thursday of the past”, referring to photographs or videos that were taken some time ago, but are considered important.

In this sense, every week different types of content are seen on the social networks of millions of people around the world, with this famous tag. This happens particularly every Thursday (following the English meaning) this is the day when “a look back” is given. This is why memorable moments in the life of each individual, such as weddings, christenings, communions, etc., are relived with the help of photographs, accompanied by #TBT.

How it came about

Although there is no established date for the emergence of this hashtag, Throwback Thursday has become one of the most used hashtags on social networks. It started on Twitter with the use of the phrase in several publications, but it was in 2012 when it really became known and became a trend. During that year, photos from the past of different users around the world began to circulate with the hashtag #TBT.

This caused many celebrities to adopt the popular hashtag and apply it as their own in their publications. In this way, #TBT became one of the most used hashtags in today’s technological era. However, this hashtag is often used in the wrong way, accompanying images or very recent publications and even on the wrong days.

How to use #TBT on Instagram

As its name suggests, Throwback Thursday refers to the past. That is why this hashtag should be used in new publications, with photos, images, or videos from the past that bring to mind the nostalgia or the feeling of the moments lived.

However, it is important to note that this hashtag refers specifically to Thursday, i.e. it should not be used on any other day of the week. However, it is very common to find publications that do not make proper use of this hashtag, using it at any time or with images that are totally unrelated to the past.

This is a serious mistake, especially if it is done from a business profile, as it denotes inexperience and inappropriate use of tags. This is why you should avoid at all costs falling into this type of mistake, using #TBT with recent photographs or videos, or, even worse, on a day other than Thursday.

On the other hand, the way to use this tag on Instagram or any other platform is very easy. You simply type the pound sign (#) followed by the keyword you want, in this case, “TBT”. With that, the keyword will automatically change colour, adding a search link and positioning your post among the search results of the network, directly related to the term in question.

What it is used for

The main objective of #TBT on Instagram or any other social network is to rescue important moments of your business or personal life that happened a long time ago. This way you can show them to your list of friends or followers and increase engagement. Similarly, this hashtag is used to facilitate the search for specific content related to the meaning of the hashtag.

However, just because it is popular does not mean that it can be applied to any post or at any time. On the contrary, you should bear in mind the above observations and avoid making the same mistakes. It is worth mentioning that, in the publications of any social network, the use of hashtags should be done in order of relevance of content or chronological order, if it is #TBT.

Other hashtags to cite the past

Although #TBT is one of the best known, there are other hashtags that, like this one, will give your publications greater popularity and, in the same way, will facilitate the search on the networks. Among the most popular are:

  • FBF: which means “Flashback Friday”.
  • WBW (Wayback Wednesday): which translates to “Wayback Wednesday”

Both have similarities with #TBT, with the difference being the day of the week on which they can be used. Being #FBF for Fridays and #WBW for Wednesdays. However, other popular hashtags on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Tumblr, and other social networks are #love, #cute, #photooftheday, #instamoment, #instagood, #fashion, #beautiful, #picoftheday, #followme, among others. These are just some of the most used tags today.

As you can see, Throwback Thursday is a tag that is very relevant in social networks nowadays. But it must be used properly to avoid unpleasant mistakes in your personal or corporate publications.
