How much data Discord uses [Best Answer]
Discord is one of the most widely used communication applications. Since it benefits users with a number of functions, Discord most likely uses a considerable amount of data. But, the question, exactly how much data it uses on purpose, remains elusive. So, how much data does Discord use? Here’s everything that you want to know about that!
Discord uses 5 MB to 50 MB per hour compared to other communication software. However, Discord’s voice chat uses 5.5 MB per minute compared to general text messaging. Discord’s upload speed is 1 MB to 25 MB per hour.
As a technology enthusiast, I did a lot of research. Fortunately, I accumulated some exciting and solid data on the Internet because Discord does not have an official statement on data usage.
So, read on to discover accurate information about Discord’s data usage.
How much Discord data usage per minute
Users generally use Discord for text, voice and video chat. Therefore, when tracking Discord data usage, we consider text messages, voice calls and video calls.
There are ways to track how much data Discord consumes. Of them, an Android app – Glasswire is acceptable in all respects. You can opt for any other suitable and compatible tool of your choice.
When I started the experiment, my cell phone had an initial amount of data of 542 KB. After a voice call for 1 minute, the amount of data consumed increased significantly by almost 100 KB. So, this is the data usage recorded in Discord, one voice call per minute.
Then, in another incident, I tested the same for video calls. This time, my initial data was 645 KB. Next, I made a 1-minute video call. When I checked Glasswire, I found that the amount of data consumed increased by 5.5 MB, a significant amount of data indeed.
How much data does Discord uses in 1 hour
I already noted the amount of data used by Discord in a voice and video chat per minute. If you want to know how much data Discord uses in 1 hour of voice and video call, you can calculate it mathematically easily. But, for better knowledge and experience, I checked the fact individually. And, fortunately, the results are the same.
Now, the initial data volume was 6.13 MB. Then I started a voice call and it lasted up to 1 hour deliberately. When I checked the amount of data, it increased about 6 MB after 1 hour. Therefore, the data used in a Discord voice call per hour is 6 MB.
Finally, when I started a video call, 12.15 MB was reading from the Glasswire application. After 1 hour of video chat, it gave a cumulative reading of 344.39 MB. That means about 330 MB of data was used for the 1 hour video chat.
One point worth mentioning is that I stopped all kinds of online operations, such as texting, sending files, etc., during the experiment to get an accurate reading.

How much data Discord uses for voice and video calls
Obviously, I just presented the amount of data consumed by Discord for a voice and video call. The summary can be, Discord presumably uses 6 MB of data for a voice call and 330 MB of data for a video call.
What about text?
A text message you want to send will involve 3 KB of data to upload and 1.5 KB of data to download (approximately).
Since we receive messages via WebSocket, receiving is much less expensive. It simply takes about (480 + n) Bytes per message to reach you. Here, n is the length of the message. If the message is long, n will be longer.
How to check Discord data usage on PC
In the previous ways in which I showed how I checked the amount of data used for a voice and video call, I used Glasswire, an Android app. Let’s assume you don’t have a smartphone, don’t worry. I’m here for you to reveal how you can track Discord data usage on your computer.
Here are the steps to check Discord data usage on your PC.
Windows
- Go to Settings. You can use a shortcut (Windows + I).
- Click Network & Internet.
- Go to Data usage and now you will see a pie chart representing data usage on different connections (Wi-Fi, Ethernet, etc.).
- Click on Usage Details if you want to see a list of the apps installed on your device along with the data consumption of each.
Mac OS
- Open the Activity Monitor.
- Click Network and you will see the current data usage separately by all applications installed on your computer.
- This is a simple process. Just two things to keep in mind. First, the usage details are only for the last 30 days. Second, this is a rough idea of how much data Discord used in the last 30 days.
How to check Discord data usage on mobile devices
How to check the amount of data used by Discord on your mobile devices is of great importance. As a PC method, this technique is also too practical to perform. So, let’s take a look.
Here are the steps to check Discord data usage on your mobile device.
Android device
- Go to Settings.
- Click Apps and then click Manage apps or Installed apps.
- Select Discord from the list that appears.
- Press Data usage.
Now, you will see graphs depicting Discord data usage for a specific network and time duration.
iPhone
- Go to Settings.
- Click Cellular.
- Scroll down a bit. You will then find a list of apps that have toggle switches on the right side.
Here, you should notice the amount of data used by each app.
How to minimize the amount of data used by Discord
If you are still not satisfied with the amount of data Discord uses, you may prefer to minimize it by taking some additional measures. I’m going to write it down for you in-depth.
Here are the steps to reduce the volume of data Discord uses.
- Open the Discord application and go to User Settings.
- Go to Text and Images.
- Disable When posted as chat links and When uploaded directly to Discord in the Show images, videos and Lolcats section.
- Enable automatic image compression from Image compression.
- Disable Show website preview information of pasted links in chat from Link Preview.
- Go to Notifications from User Settings.
- Disable system notifications.
- Go to Accessibility from User Settings.
- Go to Stickers and select the Never animate option.
In this way, you can customize Discord settings and data usage. You can also find these options intact on your computer. So, let me know if it worked for you or not.
Conclusion
From the above discussion, it is vividly evident that Discord uses a considerable amount of data. But compared to other apps like WhatsApp and many more, it is not.
Therefore, you should not worry too much about Discord’s data consumption; instead, Discord’s total data consumption is sometimes even lower than some of the main tasks on your device.
