Fix Windows 10 Audio/Sound Issues [Troubleshooting Guide]

Windows 10 is quite adaptable and within a short period of time, approximately, 100+ million devices are using Windows 10 at this juncture. This is quite a bit of the achievement of Microsoft. However, with anything many, users do face one kind of problem or the other.

With the recent update for Windows 10; users all over the world are facing audio problems in the operating system. 1# Use the Basic Approach for Fixing the Issue of Windows 10 Sound Not Working

It is always wise to approach the audio problems; starting from the basic way. All you need to do is to have a thorough investigation of your speaker’s connections. It may happen that audio cable itself is loose and requires replacement or the audio cable is inserted in the wrong audio jack.

You must be seeing the audio icon on the right-hand side of your taskbar. Check the level of volume from there. It may happen that the volume level itself is completely down and that’s why you are getting no sound on Windows 10 computer.

If you are using external speakers then please check the volume level of your speakers to ensure that they are set at the optimum sound level.

2# Windows 10 Sound Doesn’t Work? Use Device Manager to Fix Sound Glitches

There could be problems with your Windows 10 audio driver. It is always recommended to have your sound card working with updated drivers.

To fix Windows 10 audio driver issues just hit the start button and enter ‘Device Manager.’ Click on the Device Manager to launch it and under ‘Sound, video and game controllers’ you will be able to find your Windows 10 audio driver.

Just right click on the sound driver and from the pop-up menu, select the option of ‘Update Driver Software.’ Once you hit this option Windows 10 will automatically search for the updates pertaining to your sound drivers and install the latest updates for it.

Once you restart your computer the updates to the sound drivers will take effect and the issue of audio not working will be fixed.

If you are not able to pinpoint any reason behind no sound on Windows 10 computer you can try running the troubleshooter and allow Windows to find the reason behind the playback issues.

Just open the troubleshooter by navigating to Control Panel -> Troubleshooting -> Troubleshoot audio playback.

4# Setting Up a Default Playback Device to fix the issue of Windows 10 no sound

Simply, you must ensure that speakers are currently set as default playback device. Otherwise, they won’t work.

To check this setting right-click on the sound icon from the right-hand side of the taskbar and select the option of Playback Devices.

Once the window opens to ensure that a green tick is there on Speakers. This indicates that they are the default playback device. If you don’t find the green tick; then this could be the major reason for no sound on Windows 10 computer.

Just select the option of ‘Speakers’ and hit ‘Set Default’ thereafter. You will see a green tick visible on it now.

5# Trying different properties for the Speakers

If the speakers are already set as default. Then hit the ‘Properties’ option and go to the ‘Advanced’ tab of the window that opens up thereafter.

Under ‘Advanced’ tab; in the ‘Default format’ section just select a different option and click ‘Test.’ Keep on trying until you find a setting that works.

6# Uninstalling and reinstalling sound drivers

If nothing from the above-mentioned ways work and you are still facing the issue of Windows 10 volume not working then you can try uninstalling and reinstalling your Windows 10 audio driver.

For this purpose, you are required to again navigate to Device Manager Under ‘Sound, video and game controllers’ you will be able to find your Windows 10 audio driver. Just right-click on that and tap the option of ‘Uninstall.’

You will be asked your confirmation thereafter. Do mark the checkbox stating ‘Delete the driver software for this device’ and click on OK.

Now restart your computer and this will fix the issue of Windows 10 sound not working.

7# Restart audio services

If after a Windows 10 update no sound is coming then might be the audio services at the back-end got disabled. You need to enable it again.

You can search for ‘Services’ in the search box of the taskbar. Once inside; navigate your way to Windows Audio.

If this service is not working correctly then it is obvious that you will hear no sound on Windows 10 computer.

For restarting the service just double click and select ‘Start.’ You can also check the service start-up type. For Windows Audio it must be set to ‘Automatic.’ However, if you find any other option like manual or disabled activated then change it back to ‘Automatic’ and save the changes. Remember you have to change it to Automatic and not Automatic – Delayed Start.
