Battle Royale games are some of the most popular in the gaming industry today, with specimens such as Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, Apex Legends, PUBG and more. These are extremely competitive games in which dozens of players battle out to be the sole survivors at the end of the match. Check out some of the best Battle Royale games and learn more about the acclaimed genre.

What are Battle Royale games?

Popularised by games like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and Fortnite, games in the Battle Royale genre have become known for certain features, such as a large number of players (usually 100). At the start of each match, a player, or group of participants, is parachuted onto a map and can choose where they want to fall.

In most games, everyone starts with no equipment, or basic weapons, and must equip themselves to have a better chance of winning matches. The large map at the beginning of the game will be shrunk by some kind of force, such as poison gas or storm until all competitors face each other and only one winner remains.

Battle Royale game accessories

Due to its survival game nature, it is recommended to have some accessories in Battle Royale games. A gaming mouse and keyboard help to have a quick response in case the player is caught unawares by an opponent, something that happens a lot in matches.

A good headset is essential, not only to hear your teammates in multiplayer games but to hear the locomotion of your opponents. In Battle Royale games the sound plays a big role in denouncing the position of other players by the sounds of their footsteps or by the shots of their guns.

Some Battle Royale games for weak PCs can run on a cheaper gamer PC, which users can learn how to set up here. However, most of them will require at least a good quality gamer notebook, like these ones from the list we have separated. For gamers who want to spend a little less, a cheaper video game like these on the list may be the best option to get access to the best Battle Royale games.

1. Apex Legends

From the developers of the Titanfall series, Apex Legends puts up to 60 competitors to face each other, mainly in trios. Players can choose from different characters, each with their own abilities and their own play style.

In addition to excelling in the shootouts, it is also important to learn how to use each of the “Legends” characters. New heroes are also added regularly with each new season of the game and can change the dynamics of the battlefield.

Apex Legends was the first Battle Royale to introduce the purchase of downed companions to return to the battlefield, something most competitors today also feature.

Available for: PC (Steam and Origin), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.

PUBG Battlegrounds

2. PUBG: Battlegrounds

One of the first Battle Royale released, PUBG brings the most basic version of the formula, yet one of the most solid. The game focuses heavily on realism and planning, with longer matches and a greater focus on paying attention to sounds, to anticipate the movement of your opponents.

The weapons used in the game are based on real models and there are also many complements to attach to them to make them more efficient, such as sights to shoot from a distance. It is possible to face the disputes alone, in pairs or with a squad of 4 people.

As of January 12, 2022, the game became free-to-play, which greatly increased its player base. To access the competitive mode of the game, however, a one-time fee must be paid to gain “Battlegrounds Plus” status. Users who had previously purchased the game earned this status automatically.

Available for: PC (Steam), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, Android and iOS.

Fortnite: Battle Royale

3. Fortnite: Battle Royale

Epic Games’ version has become one of the most famous Battle Royale games and perhaps one of the most famous games in the gaming industry in general. Fortnite combines the serious elements of the genre, such as 100 players on an island, with a lighter and more colourful approach, which makes it more accessible to younger players. There’s also less focus on hearing footsteps or gunshots from opponents.

One of the game’s biggest differentiators is its large amount of crossovers, special appearances from other games, animations, movies and more. At the launch of its third year, the game brought a new map and participation of Spider-Man and actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as one of its main characters.

Another detail is that in addition to shooting the game has a construction mechanic, in which users can collect resources on the map and then build walls, ramps and more. So it is not uncommon to find buildings near the end of the game or even users who can build and shoot at the same time.

Players can choose between different vampires from different clans, each with specific powers, as they fight against each other and a third threat called the Entity, a group that wishes to exterminate the vampires. During matches, it will also be possible to use common weapons, as well as suck the blood of humans to get stronger.

The game is still in early access on Steam, where players can participate in the game still in development. It is scheduled for release in 2022, also on PlayStation 5. If you want to know more about tabletop RPGs, check out our article on the subject.

During matches, it is possible to encounter other elements as a form of secondary attack and combine them with your primary element to create even more powerful spells. There are also runes scattered around the world that can grant special powers such as flight, invisibility and more.

Matches have support for up to 42 players at a time with up to three people in your party. The game also gets new modes every time it is updated in a new “chapter”.

One of the most popular Battle Royale, Call of Duty: Warzone is one of the more serious games in the genre, with a greater focus on strategy elements and audio to hear footsteps and gunfire. The game also has the highest participant count among Battle Royale, with up to 150 people in solo, duo, trio or 4-man squad modes.

There are two major differences in the game in relation to other Battle Royale. The first is money, which can be obtained during matches to buy equipment. You can get money in chests scattered throughout the game, by eliminating opponents or by completing missions such as dominating points of interest or hunting a specific player.

The second is the strong integration of the game with the multiplayer mode of the Call of Duty series. Each new release of a game in the series, new weapons are inserted in Warzone and users who purchase the game have greater ease in levelling up weapons to make them better.

The game has a basic system with three types of blows in which each one is efficient against the other type to create a fair fighting experience.

Players can choose between different champions with their own skills and face each other alone or in trios for a total of up to 60 players per match. The game also offers plenty of mobility options, with parkour and a hooked rope that allows you to move easily through the scenery.

Up to 60 players are placed in contests in which they usually need to reach the end of the stage, while relying only on their own skill and a bit of luck.

With each round, the number of players is reduced until it gets to more intense elimination matches until there is only one survivor left. The winner receives crowns, which they can use to buy special skins in the game.

The game has versions announced for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch that are planned for 2022, without a specific date. August would be a good guess, as it would be a year after the game’s release on PS4. The PlayStation 4 version can also be played on PlayStation 5 via backwards compatibility.

Whoever survives to the end of the competition wins.

The game is available for free on Nintendo Switch, but only as a gift for subscribers of the Nintendo Switch Online service.

10. Super Bomberman R Online

Another classic game that won a Battle Royale version was the iconic Bomberman, a game in which users try to blow each other up with bombs that explode in a few seconds. The multiplayer of the game was a fever at the time of Super Nintendo and the Battle Royale version leaves no stone unturned in chaos.

In addition to trying to eliminate other players in Super Bomberman R Online, destroying blocks in the scenario can also guarantee extra items to increase the power and number of your bombs. However, the fewer blocks available in the scenario, the more difficult it is to trap your opponents.

Super Bomberman R Online is a purely free Battle Royale game, not to be confused with Super Bomberman R, which is paid and has a single-player campaign in the style of the classic game. If you want to purchase Super Bomberman R check out our offers here!
