Once all of a player’s checkers are in their home quadrant, they can begin bearing off. This means removing checkers from the board in accordance with dice rolls. If a player rolls a number for which there’s no checker on the corresponding point but has checkers on a higher-numbered point, they must move one checker from the highest point. If a checker is hit during the bearing off process, it must be returned to the board and make its way back to the home quadrant before bearing off can continue.

Doubling Cube

One of Backgammon’s unique features is the doubling cube. This die has the numbers 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 on its faces, and it’s used to raise the stakes of the game. At the start, the cube sits in the middle, available to both players. Before rolling, a player can propose to double the stakes. Their opponent then decides to accept and continue with doubled stakes or forfeit the game at its current value.

Strategies To Consider

While backgammon is partly a game of luck due to dice rolls, strategy plays a huge role in determining the outcome. Blocking tactics, like creating a “prime” (a row of six consecutive points occupied by two or more of a player’s checkers), can prevent the opponent from advancing. Another tactic is the “back game,” where a player intentionally lets some checkers be hit early on, hoping to trap their opponent’s checkers later in the game.
