A useful guidebook will tell the employee about what is expected of them and include a map of what they can expect in their first few weeks. It should be simple to read and easy to follow. Their responsibility is to guide the new person through their start-up period, answer questions and share any experiences they’ve had in this workplace. This way the mentors will know what concerns to address right away while employees still have time to explore options for themselves. Mentorship can last anywhere from 2 weeks to one year. It’s also good to assign mentors according to the new hire’s interests and availability. If you don’t have mentors available, assigning a work buddy is another good option. A work buddy should be someone with experience in a similar position to the new hire and they should be able to provide assistance and support.
Getting new employees settled in their workspace is important to the onboarding process. They should have everything they need, starting with office supplies on their desk, free of charge. It’s also good if there are tools and equipment readily available for employees who need them, like laptops, headphones, and mobile phones. If there’s any software needed for the job, it should be installed and ready to go as soon as they arrive. Besides this, you can also give your new employees free T-shirts, key chains, mugs, and pens with your company logo on them. Besides being a nice gesture, this also works as great marketing material.
Every new hire should be given a feedback form to fill out after completing the onboarding process. This is also an opportunity for employees and managers to discuss how things went and what could’ve gone better before the employee settles into their daily routine. After the feedback is collected the company can figure out where improvements need to be made and where they’re going right. This is a great way to collect new ideas, too.
