Perhaps this is a simple silly question and does not need an answer. But sometimes it can be confusing. I tried to open an account Google but I could not succeed because my email ID was already associated with one of my Google account.
To open an account in Google is really different from opening an account for Gmail. If you have a Gmail ID then you do not have to open Google account. But if you do not want to have a Gmail Id then you can open an account in Google.
Benefit of a Google account
If you have an account in Google and signed in then if you search in Google it will remember you search history. And that is useful.
To open a Google account you can use any email address here other than Gmail but that email address should not be already associated with any of Gmail ID.
Benefit of a Gmail account
A Gmail account is also a Google account but it much more than above Google account, by having a Gmail ID you can use whole range of Google services like Orkut, YouTube, Google Buzz and all other Google services with a single Gmail ID. You do not have to sign up for them separately.
