It is not joke, you can edit any webpage on the web but only for fun and temporarily. When you edit a web page you do not edit that.
One of the firefox add-ons is page hacker that let you edit any webpage. After installing this add-on you can use ctrl+F2 (keyboard shortcut) to edit any webpage. Do the same to disable editing.

These edits are temporary when you refresh the page you lost that because some java script works behind the scenes and make any web page editable. You can use a blank page as notepad. If you want to edit a page and want to remove extra materials on page you remove them and you can print the page or you can save page to your hard drive using ctrl+s.
If you want you can place this button you see in screen shot (skill) by right clicking on toolbar and clicking on customize. Drag and drop the same icon on your toolbar.
