Since few weeks I am using Google docs, mostly document (MS Word alternative) but I never thought to download any document in computer but a day my friend ask me how to save Google docs document in PC and I was unanswered and started looking for save to PC button and If find a Download As button and it was amazing. Because it let me save the document in various file formats for further use.
To save your document in your favorite format go to file menu and look for download as there you can download it as open office format (odp), PDF, Word, RTF and zipped HTML. See above screen shot.
