Reading a Labnol post about wordpress plugins I also decided to publish my list of plugins that power TechShali and my other blogs. My previous list if plugins in 2011 can be found here. That is list is not completely changed many plugins I am still using in this year as well.

New Plugins I have added:

(1) Efficient Related Posts
I was using Contextual Related Posts by Ajay D’Souza, it was working fine but the only problem with plugin was load on database, to show related posts it was searching for thousands of posts every time and it was adding significant load on database and making the blog slower.

On other side Efficient Related Posts makes a list of related posts and that can be updated anytime and will show only most related posts and list can be limited to 10 (or similar) posts so it will not search in thousand of posts for related posts.

(2) Growmap_Anti_Spambot_Plugin
This post is to prevent spam bots in comment section, I was using Akismet for spam prevention but it is not 100% active against spam bots. Seeing the growing number of spam comments in spam box I tried GASP and it is working fine.

(3) Jetpack_by_WordPress.com
This plugin is a collection of plugins and it adds many of the features of WordPress.com for hosted wordpress blogs. You can read about this plugin here in detail.

(4) RSS_Footer
Use of this plugin is to add original source of your post to get the credit for content theft via RSS. But this plugin can be used to add link ads or links in RSS footer.

(5) Private Plugin

Mots of the similar plugins I use on my other blogs as well but some of the plugins can be different that I am detailing here.

(1) Categories to Tags Converter Importer
This plugin can convert tags to categories and categories to tags.

(2) Embed Iframe
Using this plugin you can embed iframe in content area of blog.

(3) Executable PHP widget
Using this plugin you can add executable PHP tags in sidebar of widget, this can be useful to add extra capabilities in your blog.

(4) Fast Secure Contact Form
To add a contact form and get less spam message in email box you can use this plugin, it also works with Akismet.

(5) Google_XML_Sitemap for_Images
This plugin is developed by Amit Agarwal to index your images in Google video search.

(6) Google_XML_Sitemap for_Mobile
This plugin is also developed by Amit Agarwal to create a sitemap for mobile users.

(7) PubSubHubbub
This plugin is to deal with content scrapers, as soon as you publish a post it will reached on many places and tell the Google you have published this post first.

(8) Advanced Random Posts
You can read more about this plugin here. This plugin shows random and use images of the post for thumbnail.

As you can see some of the plugins I am not using on TechShali at this time but I can use them in future.

Compose WordPress Posts in Hindi and other Indian languages in WordPress Panel: Indic IME

WordPress is available in Hindi and in other Indian languages here, but if you want just type in Hindi using Unicode characters in WordPress post composing panel. You can install Indic IME. After installing this plugin you can write in WordPress in your own Indian language as Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Malayalam etc.

This Plugin is developed by Vishalon.

This plugin is as easy to use as Google_transliteration.

After installing this plugin it will add in WordPress editing toolbar where you can select your language from drop down menu.

To work this plugin for you it requires a function in footer to call this plugin is wp_footer().

There are chances after typing your word you will questions marks instead word your typed this is because your installation of repress does not have Unicode (UTF-8) support.

Using IndicIME plugin, you can very easily write in 9 Indian scripts: Bengali(Assamese, Bengali, Manipuri), Devanagari(Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, Sanskrit), Gujarati, Gurmukhi(Punjabi), Kannada, Malaylam, Oriya, Tamil and Telugu. It does not require any software download for writing in Indian script. Using this plugin, visitor can directly type in Indic script in search box or comment. Blog owner now can directly type title, tag, excerpts (in short everywhere) in his/her langauge of choice. If you need help in typing, a quick reference image is shown when clicked question mark icon.

Typing is extremely easy. Typing follows “The way you speak, the way you type” rule. It is called transliteration. For example, choose “Devanagari” from the script list and try to if you type “bhaarat”. You will see that depending on the key you pressed, it will automatically be converted into devanagari script. Half letters and special letters are also very easy to write. Try to type “prashna”, “karma” or “padma” and you will see how easy it is to type in your favourite language. For reference of English and Indian script character mapping, please refer to the help by clicking on help (/question mark) icon.

Do you know Self hosted WordPress is available in Hindi and other India languages

We know wordpress.com is available in many languages including many of languages of India. But I was really unaware of wordpress.org that is self hosted. It is also available in some of the Indian languages.

If you want to get self hosted WordPress in your language it is possible it may be already ready for you to download and get started. You also can help WordPress to make available WordPress in your language or you can improve the translation here is information.

You can download and install self hosted WordPress is Hindi, Bengali, Tamil. however I could not find the link for Hindi, I am sure it is available somewhere on the web.

WordPress 3.3 (Sonny) is the best WordPress Version Ever

The new and latest WordPress version 3.3 codenamed “sonny” is available to download and update. And it is the best WordPress version ever as they say it latest and greatest.

Experienced users will appreciate the new drag-and-drop uploader, hover menus for the navigation, the new toolbar, improved co-editing support, and the new Tumblr importer. We’ve also been thinking a ton about what the WordPress experience is like for people completely new to the software. Version 3.3 has significant improvements there with pointer tips for new features included in each update, a friendly welcome message for first-time users, and revamped help tabs throughout the user interface. Finally we’ve improved the dashboard experience on the iPad and other tablets with better touch support.

Now WP supports drag and drop media files. So you can directly drag and drop your picture in your posts in WP editor. Now you do need to choose different button to upload picture, video or audio. There is one single button that you need to upload any media file. After uploading your file you will see appropriate settings for your media. Now it supports .RAR and 7Zip file extensions so you can directly upload archive files.

Fly out menus makes your whole experience completely difference. SO just hover your mouse over a menu and you will see links in popup menu. Now you do not need to collapse or expand menus to work for you.

So now you get more space, more peace, better work.

WordPress is a stat of art CMS. There are two type of WordPress one is wordpress.org that provides self hosted WordPress solution and the other is wordpress.com where you can start blogging without self hosting or buying and web hosting.

If you are not looking for professional blogging options you should go with wordpress.com.

So wordpress.com is easy to go but if you want to learn it by other’s experience here is a good guide for you.

learn.wordpress.com is a good place where you can learn all the basics of wordpress.com, it is an online book divided in 11 different chapters.

Sticky Posts in WordPress Can create problem sometimes

I wrote a post about IlistIndia and make it sticky post. The decision was good but that same I noticed another problem on my blog’s homepage, I was unaware why the problem happened. I have set 10 posts on homepage of techshali but it was showing 11 posts, one extra post was at bottom looking like a patch. I was thinking to ask about it in Thesis forums or search on Google about the problem. After one week today I made that ilistindia post no sticky and the problem was solved then I knew what was casing for 11th post on homepage.

Tip: How to Get Better Preview in Windows Live Writer

Windows_Live_Writer is my favorite blog editor and I compose my all the posts using Windows Live Writer. If you also use WLW for blog posting and if you like Theme interface (Why WLW?) you may want to see post preview. Post preview is same as it can be in a live site f you have updated blog theme in WLW. But sometimes results can not be fine.

Suppose you want to show 10 posts on WordPress hosted blog’s home page with excerpt. It is very good decision but it may not be good in WLW if you preview the post. But here is a fix. Any setting you have made on your WP blog that is but to get exact preview of your post in WLW you can sue following steps.

In WordPress control panel in settings section click on Reading set 1 for Blog Pages show at most and save the option. Now go to WLW blog account section on top navi there click on update Theme, it will ask to download theme and generate a temporary post, allow it. When your theme is updated in WLW you will see same interface of your live blog in preview section.

If you are using These theme this problem can be for sure, for this you have to go to Design option of Thesis section ion control panel. In design options look for display options expand that and click display full excerpt, and navigate to home page display option click on Features & teasers select 1 and save. And go to update theme in WLW. Before taking this option you have to follow above paragraph.

When theme is updated you can get back to your previous setting making changing them again.

WordPress 3.1 Has Built-in Picture Gallery

If you have noticed WordPress 3.1 has built-in gallery that you can insert in posts or pages. It is not an option for Nextgen gallery but if you are looking for some simple gallery solution you can use this. As it is built-in so it will not take extra space.

When you insert an image using post editing panel you can select multiple images to upload. We normally use windows live writer to compose blog posts so this feature goes unnoticed.

When picture uploading is complete, do not forget to click on “save all changes’ in bottom side. After clicking on save all changes you will see gallery settings and a link for insert gallery.

You can make some settings as insert full image files or just picture thumbnails and gallery columns. I have created a picture gallery using inbuilt features of WordPress in this post.

The beautiful actress you see in this gallery is Asin Thottumkal. She is a south beauty. She is well-known for her role in Ghajini with Amir Khan.

The gallery has only 17 pictures but two more pictures you see in this gallery are weakness of this feature.

Akismet Alternative Anti Spam WordPress Plugins

Akismet is most popular anti spam plugin, it works in comment section. It has a unique formula to detect spam comments. But if you have the problem with Akismet you can look for other options as well. They may not be full alternative but they work fine. To use Akismet was easy just install it and get an API from WP.com. There was website also for Akismet but most if users getting API for this plugin from wp.com. But now wp.com has removed this option so you have to go to Akismet.com to get this plugin. So now it is professional not free. It is free for personal blog or site, but if you want you can pay for personal site, actually they ask how much it worth for you.

There was a time when you had to pay only $5 for Akismet API key if you earn more than $500 from your blog. But now if you get more than 25K page views month you will counted as an enterprise blogger. It will cost you $50 month for 5 sites.

So if you do not have this plugin yet, you will not get it for free any more if you are willing to make money with your blog.

Or if you do not have Akismet and want to get rid of spam you can use some of these plugins.

(1) Facebook comment for wordpress
This plugin will kill spam because there is no way to leave comment anonymously or by spam bots. To leave a comment one has to use his Facebook profile id. So only human will be able to leave comments and you can blacklist any user.

(2) Defensio Anti Spam
This is also not free but personal edition is enough for bloggers like you and me. It is free if you have maximum 5 employees and you post up 25,000 posts per month. It is a basic anti spam plugin, it also can detect malicious content.

(3) Block Top Spammers
It is a complementary plugin for Akismet or defensio plugins. It is unable to detect spam but it can block IP address. It needs a plugin to detect spam comments. Once you are sure about spamming IP address you can block that IP.

Instant Backup Plugin for WordPress

WordPress backup is a hassle full work, it is easy too but if you are lazy it is not easy. I use WP-DB Manager plugin for backup and use FTP for files backup. I keep a backup of plugins, themes, .htaccess and config.php and picture folders.

WP-InstantBackup is a new plugin but it looks promising because of its killer features and easy to use options. It is available to download on wordpress.org.

You can use FTP backup or email or both.
You can backup database or file system backup or full back backup.
It also has a backup selection list so you can specify which files and folders to backup.
You also can take a backup of Admin interface.
You can perform backup by visiting a public URL using a hash key.
You can create password protected zip files, so if ever it will lost you would lost your data.
You can give custom names to backup files.

How to take backup?
After installing and activation you will see links or buttons on top right corner of admin panel. Frist link is DB means database backup, second link is FS means file system backup and third link id Full means full backup.
Which backup you need just click on that button it will ask you ok or cancel. Once you have selected yes it will start taking backup.

To perform any backup you must need to setup this plugin means you have enable email backup of FTP backup first. If you use FTP backup method you need to give host, username and password that you provide to login to FTP.

If you select email backup you need to provide email address of your hosting account in from field and you can use any email address (preferable) in to field.

WP-InstantBackup is a good plugin but it does not have a schedule backup feature.
