Notepad is a note taking application from Microsoft which is absolutely free but with you have to buy Windows because it is free with Windows. I think it is a tiny and some bit lovely program. If you like simplicity you may like notepad. Microsoft releases new versions of Windows and Office but there is no improvement in notepad, there should be some reason for it. Or we may get to see improved version of Notepad in future. Microsoft has different programs for different purpose as notepad is simple note taking app, means it is not a word processor, for word processing there is WordPad that also comes bundled with Windows.
In notepad if you apply a color for a single word that will be applied to all other words and all other notepad files. This is same for font size also because notepad is a very basic text editor.
But I am going to talk about notepad alternatives. There is a competition between notepad alternatives and there are so many alternatives (I have already found 18). One thing is sure all the notepad alternatives are defiantly superior to notepad.
All notepad alternatives are for download but I do not recommend downloading each and I am not giving full description of every program, instead I suggest visiting the website and reading features and downloading and installing some of them. I have done same for me and I found my favorite one, which I am going to share with the world.
Now let’s take a look on these notepad alternatives I have found and selected to include in this list.
Notepad++
Notepad++ is my favorite notepad alternative, some of the programs I use daily in my PC and notepad is one of most used program in my PC. It is a source code editor and notepad replacement. It is completely free there is no pro version. I think it is the best notepad alternative.
Editpadlite
editpadlite is a lite version of editpadpro. I have used this application; it is also very powerful text editor for basic text editing.
Notetab
notetab is a popular text and HTML editor, you make document templates etc. There are three versions of this program; pro, standard and light; light version is freeware version.
Zulupad
zulupad is a note taking app, you can keep bookmarks, appointments and to do lists. Zulupad is wiki style notepad app. I have tried this app also. There are two version one pro that is only for $15.
Pnotepad
pnotepad is programmer’s notepad, it written keeping programmers in mind.
Notepad2
notepad2 is a clone of original notepad, it does not required installation.
Pspad
It is also programmer’s editor for windows.
Metapad
metapad is a simple, fast, lite with similar features to notepad with so many extra features.
Crimson Editor
It is a simple and fast but there is no new release.
Docpad
docpad is a plan text editor for general purpose. It has built-in calendar, calculator and character map.
Ted Notepad
ted notepad is powerful, simple and general purpose text editor. It does not required installation.
Notepadtabs
It is multi-tab notepad as you see in Firefox, you can choose themes also.
Akelpad
akelpad is simple and fast text editor. It is like notepad classic with advance editing options.
Pronotepad
It is also similar to classic notepad but has many advance options.
Win32pad
There are many features missing in classic notepad, so this program’s purpose is to fill the gap.
Edxor
edxor is similar to other notepad alternatives.
Bdvnotepad
You can use it from CD, floppy or USB drive. Load any size of text file.
Tinyedit
It is an ideal tool for notepad replacement. It has powerful features for programmers and web developers.

You should also have a look at SSuite Office for a free word pad. It has almost all the features of Word, and looks and works the same. {except for the ribbons}. Their word processor is called WordGraph.
It is only 12 MB in size. Nice and small :) . Their software also doesn't need to run on Java or .NET, like MS Office and so many open source software, so it makes their software very small, efficient, and easy to use. :D
